We ran 100 real B2B buyer prompts through OpenAI's search-enabled model, extracted every citation, analyzed 328 URLs across 239 domains, and reverse-engineered the structural patterns behind what AI chooses to cite — and what it ignores.
When a potential buyer asks an AI for product recommendations, which sources does it actually trust? We set out to answer this definitively — not with speculation, but with hard data.
We ran 100 real-world B2B buyer prompts through OpenAI's search-enabled model (gpt-4o-search-preview) via OpenRouter, documented every URL the model cited, and analyzed the structural patterns.
The result: a single site — TechRadar — dominates AI citations with 23 appearances across 100 queries. The top 10 domains account for 17.4% of all citations, while the long tail of 229 domains each appear only once. The AI overwhelmingly favors blog-style listicles, comparison content, and review roundups — not vendor documentation, not academic research, not mainstream news.
This report presents every finding, every data point, and the actionable patterns that content marketers and SEO professionals can use to earn AI citations.
Fully transparent, reproducible methodology. No cherry-picking, no undisclosed parameters.
We crafted 100 prompts that mirror actual B2B software buying queries across 10 categories: CRM, API tools, marketing, cloud, PM, cybersecurity, e-commerce, HR, AI/ML, and collaboration.
Each prompt was executed via openai/gpt-4o-search-preview-2025-03-11 through OpenRouter's API with web search enabled. No system prompt, no priming, no follow-up questions.
Every response was parsed for web search annotations — the model's native citation mechanism. We extracted URLs, titles, domains, and citation positions.
We analyzed domain frequency, site type distribution, URL path patterns, citation titles, response structure, category-level breakdowns, and cross-category domain overlap.
Most "AI SEO" advice is based on guesswork. This study uses the model's own citation annotations — not regex guesses at URLs — ensuring every data point reflects what the AI actually chose to cite.
The numbers paint a clear picture. Here are the headline findings that every content marketer needs to understand.
These are the websites that AI trusts enough to cite when answering real buyer questions.
